BREAKING: Guipuzcoa electoral board bans Otegi from running for office

The electoral board of Guipuzcoa has ruled that EH Bildu‘s candidate Arnaldo Otegi can’t run for Lehendakari (Basque PM) at the Basque election on 25 September. Otegi is currently suspended from holding a public position after serving 6 years in jail, although the his sentence is not specific, which in the past has allowed other candidates in his position to run.

EH Bildu spokesmen are expected to talk to the press this afternoon at 17h CET. The party is expected to appeal the decision.

Ciudadanos’ leader Albert Rivera has announced that his party would negotiate support Mariano Rajoy if he schedules a date for the confidence debate and accepts the following six conditions:

  • Politicians indicted for corruption must be immediately fired
  • End of parliamentary immunity
  • New electoral law
  • End of pardons in cases of political corruption
  • Maximum 2 terms per PM
  • More transparency, including parliamentary investigation of PP’s illegal funding.

Breaking: Podemos and PSOE in alternative government talks

Podemos Secretary for Policy and Strategy, Íñigo Errejón, has revealed in a TV interview that his party and PSOE have considered the possibility to attempt a government deal if Mariano Rajoy fails to be re-elected. However, Errejón has confirmed that it’s Rajoy’s turn to try, and that formal negotiations would only take place after he fails to obtain support at a confidence debate.
